Gardens of Coastal New Hampshire

July 28-29, 2008

One of the largest greenhouses in the Northeast and the home of Proven Winners, historic gardens including Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth, and the latest annual flowers in the Proven Winners and Prescott Park display gardens at the scenic Portsmouth harbor, are the floral highlights of this requested tour.  We’ll also have time to shop, take a boat cruise, sample seafood, or just relax.

Day One

Our luxury Premier motorcoach will begin at the Horticulture Research Center in South Burlington, Vermont, with a stop at the historic King’s Garden at Ft. Ticonderoga in New York,  There we’ll have refreshments and a brief overview of these 1920’s era gardens by the noted Marian Cruger Coffin

We’ll continue on to the Concord, NH vicinity to Pleasant View Greenhouses where we’ll tour their modern production, display gardens, and have a box lunch (www.pvg.com/info/aboutus.cfm).  Our final horticulture stop this day will be the historic Moffat Ladd house and gardens in downtown Portsmouth where we’ll have a tour of both (www.moffattladd.org/).  Special features of the gardens, redesigned in the late 1800’s, are an original damask rose planted in 1768, and the nationally historic horsechestnut tree planted by General Whipple in 1776 upon returning from signing the Declaration of Independence.

You’ll then have an hour to browse the shops and cafes of downtown Portsmouth, before the evening options.  For an additional fee you can sign up for a relaxing harbor cruise aboard the Heritage (www.portsmouthharbor.com/).  Or, you can just go on to our comfortable hotel, the Hampton Inn (www.hamptoninnportsmouth.com/index.php) to relax or enjoy their complimentary cocktail hour.  For dinner, you can either take the free hotel shuttle to local restaurants or the nearby Fox Run Mall, or join the group for a meal at Newick’s in Dover by Great Bay.  Our menu at Newick’s includes options from steak to lobster.

Day Two

We’ll begin the morning with a private opening at Fuller Gardens, a block from the ocean along the “gold coast” of New Hampshire (www.fullergardens.org/FullerGardens/).  Designed in the Colonial Revival style, these gardens feature roses, perennials, a Japanese garden, and conservatories.  They represent one of the few remaining estate gardens of the early 20th century, with influences from Shurtleff, Cherry Hill nurseries, and the Olmstead firm.

Following this visit, we’ll return to Portsmouth along the scenic coastal road, spending midday at Strawbery Banke Museum and gardens (www.strawberybanke.org/).  This recreated New England coastal village features houses and gardens spanning four centuries.  You’ll have the chance to tour all, including an optional included gardens tour.  You can eat on the grounds, or try one of the 30 downtown restaurants within a few minutes walk.  Across the street from the entrance, right on the harbor, is a park you wont want to miss before leaving.  Prescott Park is an official display garden for new flowers, including the All America Selections, and features designed gardens as well.

Refreshments will be served going and coming, videos on the bus will showcase other gardens including ones abroad, and tour hosts will share their expertise. The tour price includes travel by luxury motor coach, refreshments, box lunch the first day, all admissions, lodging, and breakfast the second day.  Any family or friends interested in joining you?  Send in your registration NOW in order to guarantee seats on this unique, relaxing, comfortable and educational tour sponsored by the Friends of the Hort Farm, in collaboration The Kings Garden at Ft. Ticonderoga and UVM Extension.
